The Mindset of The Modern Marketer

The old school method is “Do it, delegate it, or ditch it.”
I supplement this tried and true formula with our home-grown version of automation.
My new skool approach is “Do it, automate it, delegate it, or ditch it,” or “Think-Automate.”
This methodology definitely presents the small business world with a vastly improved system to manage their daily operations so they can focus on growth.

Books

The 3 books I mention below are fairly short, they will take around 8hrs each to read at an average reading speed of 400-500 words per minute.  Executive Summaries are not available yet for any of these books, and I have memberships to the two biggest providers (SoundView and GetAbstract)  If you are a slow reader or want to learn how to read faster, you can read Tim Ferriss's (author of the Four Hour Work Week, creator of LifeStyle Design and the Life Hacking Movement) blog post, Scientific Speed Reading: How to Read 300% Faster in 20 Minutes.

Drive by Daniel Pink just released. (author of A Whole New Mind)
- Why carrots and sticks don't work.  All about Autonomy, Mastery, and Purpose.
- His lecture at TED Conference - The Surprising Science of Motivation (18:26mins)

How The Might Fall by Jim Collins (author of Good to Great and Built to Last)

- Beautifully detailed analysis of why great companies fall from grace and die

Trust Agents by Chris Brogan and Julian Smith (written by two young social media moguls)
- These guys are pioneers in the social media field

DISC - Crash Course in How it Can Help You and Your Business Grow

Jim Cecil (Nurture Institute) recently turned me on to a personality/behavioral profiling system called DISC.  Jim has been talking about the high response rates he has seen by dimesionalizing communications for several weeks, and I have to say the golden advice he has been giving me has fallen on somewhat deaf ears, but it is not wasted.  The penny has now dropped, and it did so when I saw the below on the Competitive Edge website, one of the companies Jim recommend to me for DISC coaching; the other company was Target Training International.

What this picture enabled me to understand is this: when authoring a marketing piece, it takes just a few more minutes to create four options for your prospects to follow - each catering to the needs of one of the four personality types.  For more info, I recommend visiting the Wikipedia page on DISC.

When I asked Jim which book I should buy, here is the message I got:

Will,

Hands down. The best book I ever read, by two of the smartest people I know on the subject.
Judy Suiter’s library at www.competetiveedgeinc.com is the most elegant guide to the very depths of the real value in assessments.
Well worth the investment for the serious student of styles and behaviors.

Jim

The Universal Language DISC by Bill J. Bonnstetter, Judy Suiter, and Dominique Bruneton (Hardcover - Dec. 7, 2004)

1 new from $143.95

7 used from $45.65

Needless to say, I have since bought the book and am eagerly awaiting its arrival.

Four Hour Workweek "Expanded and Updated"

My copy of the new Four Hour Workweek just arrived.  I like the first book, but didn't really connect w/ the message b/c of the presentation style.  Recently, I started to read Tim Ferriss' blog and connected w/ the sincerity and passion behind his message.  Now I am a loyal and avid follower of his teachings.

I am keen to start reading his new book, which I will do later today.
